Hoi An is an ancient town of Vietnam, it was the main trading center of the central region in late the 16th century to the 17th century. In Hoi An, you’ll be admired old houses over hundreds of years old, the beautiful beach at Cua Dai and Cham Island. I had visited Hoi An 3 times, so I has accumulated some experiences. Here are some my travel experiences around Hoi An. They are included the address of cheap motels in Hoi An, Cham island information etc.
How to go to Hoi An
You can take a bus from Da Nang bus station to Hoi An. There is one bus leave every 30 minutes, the first bus start from 5:00 am or 6:00 am and the last one is 5:00 pm. The bus to Hoi An will pass Marble Mountain tourist site, so you can stop here for visiting, after that you come back to the bus station to continue to Hoi An, it is far from each other about 100 meters or less. Note that you have to wave your hand because the bus’ driver just stop when he see passengers wave their hand. In addition to the bus, you can rent a motorbike and go along the beach from Danang to Hoi An (very beautiful sight).
Attractions in Hoi An
If you want to visit My Son and Cham Island, you should buy a tour from the company to save the money. There are many tour companies which are scattered in Hoi An ancient town.
Cham Islands: Lying 18 km offshore from Hoi An, the Cham Islands (known locally as Cu Lao Cham) feature beautiful seascapes and landscapes. This island group has 3,000 inhabitants; most of whom make a living from fishing. It is perfect for a day trip with snorkeling or a dive on some beautiful corals, a delicious seafood lunch on the island, or a walk along the “eco-tour” trail. It is much nicer to spend overnight on the island, and then you will have chances to explore the island and experience your great time with sunset and sunrises which is much spectacular or go fishing at night and have barbecue on the island. There are many other interesting attractions for visitors, including fresh seafood, traditional crafts, swimming and sightseeing. Recently important archaeological remains were found and these are now exhibited in a small museum near the main jetty. The island is rich in aquatic resources, with 165 hectares of coral and 500 hectares of sea weeds. The waters around Cu Lao Cham is home to 135 species of coral, four species of tiger shrimp and 84 species of mollusk, many of which are listed in Vietnam’s and the world’s Red Book of endangered species.
The Japanese Covered Bridge: The Japanese Covered Bridge in Hoi An is a beautiful example of the Japanese architecture of the period. Connecting Tran Phu St with Nguyen Thi Minh Khai St, the Japanese Covered bridge was constructed in the 1590s by the Japanese community of Hoi An, in order to create a link with the Chinese quarters across the stream. Over the centuries the ornamentation of the bridge has remained relatively faithful to the original Japanese design. Its simplicity contrasts greatly with the Vietnamese and Chinese penchant for wild decoration. The French flattened out the roadway to make it more suitable for their motor vehicles, but the original arched shape was restored during major renovation work carried out in 1986.
Fukian Assembly Hall (Phuc Kien): This is the grandest of the assembly halls, built in 1697 by Chinese merchants from Fukian Province. It is a showpiece of classical Chinese architecture, at least after you pass the first gate, which was added in 1975. It’s loaded with animal themes: The fish in the mosaic fountain symbolizes scholarly achievement, the unicorn flanking the ascending stairs symbolizes wisdom, the dragon symbolizes power, the turtle symbolizes longevity, and the phoenix symbolizes nobility. The main temple is dedicated to Thien Hau, goddess of the sea, on the main altar. To the left of her is Thuan Phong Nhi, a goddess who can hear ships in a range of thousands of miles, and on the right is Thien Ly Nhan, who can see them. Go around the altar for a view of a fantastic detailed miniature boat. There are two altars to the rear of the temple: the one on the left honoring a god of prosperity and the one on the right honoring a goddess of fertility. The goddess of fertility is often visited by local couples hoping for children. She is flanked by 12 fairies or midwives, one responsible for each of a baby’s functions: smiling, sleeping, eating, and so forth.
Phung Hung old house: Phung Hung old house (address – 04 Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street) was built over 100 years ago, during the prosperous development of Hoi An. The house is also one of the most beautiful form of architecture in Hoi An ancient town. The special structure has a high wooden attic and wide corridors around, showing the development of technical architecture and the interference between Asian styles at that time. Phung Hung old house is a combination of the three architecture styles: Vietnam, Japan and China. In particular, balcony and door system is Chinese architecture. The roof of the nave is Japanese architecture. Grillage systems, crossbeam, spars, roof of facade and backside is Vietnam architecture.
