The famous British newspaper, the Telegraph, has made an interesting statistics of the 10 most distinctive dishes in the world. Surprisingly, Vietnam – a small country “own” or be involved to three of the top 10 specialties are field mouse, durians and pufferfish.
1. The cheapest dish
“Wood mouse or field mouse are harmful to crops, so the farmers catch them, bake them, wrap them in banana leaves and bring them to market as a dinner dish”, the Telegraph described the dish in Vietnam. In addition, the market in Thailand also sell grilled field mouse and grilled bats at very cheap prices.
Actually, the above remark of the Telegraph is not proper, the grilled field mouse is currently a specialty at some restaurants in Vietnam, and the price is not cheap.
2. The most expensive dish
In January 2007, Cristiano Savini, a hunter of Truffle fungus (Truyp fungus) from Tuscany, Italy – with his father and the dog Rocco found a 3.3 kg white Truffle fungus. This giant fungus was auctioned off at a casino in Macao for USD 330,000. This is a rare fungus, having many flavors and grows underground.
3. The food cause most disunion
Durian is a popular fruit in the south of Vietnam. It has delicious taste, something fatty and sweet in the throat, but this fruit has an unpleasant smell. Because of this strong smell, durian is banned from taxis and public transport in Southeast Asia. Therefore, it is nicknamed “The dish cause most disunion in the world”.
Writer Anthony Burgess described after eating this fruit: “It’s like I’m eating a sweet raspberry in the toilet”.
4. The most frightening dish
Telegraph rated Smalahove as the world’s most feared dish. This is a traditional Christmas dish of Norwegian, including shaved head of sheep, removes the brain, and boiled thoroughly for 3 hours. The ear and the eye are the first parts eaten when they are hot, then the next parts of the sheep’s head. Tongue and eye muscles are considered as the best parts of this dish.
5. The most stirring dish
Casu Marzu is the fermented cheese from sheep’s milk. During fermentation, the maggots will appear and crawl around the cheese. Therefore, when you eat Casu Marzu, you will feel the maggots wiggling in your mouth. On average, this piece of cheese will have thousands of maggots inside.
6. The most “lovely” dish
This dish is also from a kind of mouse, but Peruvian people consider hamster as a source of nutritious protein for the family. It is usually grilled in whole hamster. Hamster’s skin is tough but the meat tastes like rabbit meat.
7. The most vulgar dish
Sushi, a feature of Japanese cuisine is famous over the world not only because of good taste but also because of eye-catching colors and artistic decoration. However, Nyotaimori – a sushi party on naked woman’s body is one of the special sushi eating way, but is also rated as the most vulgar dish by the Telegraph. The price of these meals is not cheap at all.
8. The most dangerous food
Fugu is made of puffer fish and it is very popular in Japan. This is the most dangerous dish in the world because puffer fish contains a large amount of toxic in the liver and ovaries, which can be lethal if not carefully processed.
9. The most stinky dish
In 2004, a team of scientists at the University of Bedfordshire invented an electronic nose that is capable of analyzing the smell of cheeses. As a result, they discovered that Vieux Boulogne – a soft cheese in northern France – is the world’s most stinky cheese.
The smell of Vieux Boulogne is stronger than Epoisses de Bourgogne – a cheese has been banned from public transport in France.
10. The most spicy food
Infinity chili has spicy taste up to 1.067.286 degrees Scoville (Scoville indicates the spicy level of chili proposed by American chemist Wilbur Scoville in 1912). Those who eat this type of chili are hospitalized because of blistering and burning the oral cavity.
